Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A large tree bends heavily to one side in wind and rain above a single-story brick house with a shingled roof and shrubs along the front, under an overcast gray sky.

A contractor sizing and installing a mini-split in Montgomery County has to account for what the local climate actually demands, and the weather record here shapes that calculation. 81 severe weather events were recorded in Montgomery County, North Carolina between 2015 and 2024. At roughly that pace, severe weather is real but not the dominant stress a system faces year to year. Poor siting, undersized line sets, or a sloppy refrigerant charge will shorten a unit's service life faster than the storm history will. A contractor who gets those fundamentals right is doing the work this county's conditions call for.

Interior of a garage with concrete block walls, a closed metal roller door, large round ventilation ducts suspended from the ceiling, an aluminium stepladder and a filled white sack on the floor.

The electrical service in a house built for an earlier generation of HVAC equipment was sized around what that equipment asked of it, and a mini-split draws differently. Half the homes in Montgomery County, North Carolina were built in 1984 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap is where installation jobs in this county stall: a contractor running the load calculation on a new system has to look at the panel first, because a box that was adequate for what it was built around may not be adequate for what goes in now. Ductwork is a separate question here, since mini-splits are ductless, but the electrical is not.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System Involved in an HVAC Installation

Illustrated cutaway of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by pipes to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and delivers conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or on a bracket outside the house and contains the compressor and coil that do the heavy work of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor head to the outside, and a dedicated electrical line feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what fits the specific conditions of your home.
